In many cities in the world there is a pollution allarm these days, in other areas there are floodings, temperatures are well above avarage everywhere. When will we realize that we have passed the limit and that we are distroying the planet? Yes, politicians talk about that and they agree that something must be done but it never happens, why? Because we are so caught up in this system of unlimited growth (economical and technological) that we are unable to stop. We live in the illusion that, through technology, we can create heaven on earth, living longer and better. We are scared of sufferying and dying, thus we worship technique as our saver. However that will never make us happy, it will only take us to the brink of self distruction, to hell!

Martin Heidegger and the Abandonment
The famous phrase of Martin Heidegger "only a God can save us" may be subject to different interpretations. According to Diego Fusaro it means that there is no room to change the world through praxis and it is a surrender to the fate of the technique without possibility of transformation. This also results in a de-empowerment of man who has no freedom of initiative as we are submitted to the history of Being.I would like to propose a different interpretation. It is true that Heidegger often says that man cannot save himself and he criticizes praxis conceived as the primacy of the humankind creating history. However he also says that Being is shown to man who must walk the path of abandonment and listening. Then there is room for human action but within the Being ( r with my own words within the mystery of the Whole). I do not interpret the abandonment as surrending to the fate of this mechanism that Heidegger calls Gestell. Abandonment is already a practice, a decision not to do but never independent of the Whole. Abandonment, returning to the earth, to nature, to our roots, economic slowdown, I think this is the only revolutionary path we can take.

The fear of death
In our current Western society we have removed death with all the problems and anxieties arising. But removing the problem does not solve it, rather it gets worse. Our civilization, consciously or unconsciously, plans to use the technique as an antidote to the anguish of death. The obsession to prolong life, stay young as long as possible, are all examples of madness in which we live. We go so far as to start feeding the illusion of immortality. We plan to use the technique to become immortal and instead we are dominated to the point of risking self-destruction. I do not think there is a philosophical remedy against the anguish of death. However it would be important to learn to face it and to accept that it is part of our life.

Freedom: less work, more free time.
John Maynard Keynes thought in the '30s that by the end of the 20th century we would need to work only 2-3 hours per day thanks to the technological advancement. He could say that as he presumably believed that man can control and guide technology. Has this happened?
No, because once we enter in this system we end up being dominated by what we created.
We believe in progress, we hope that technological advancement will solve our problems and anguishes. We even think that one day we could be able to overcome death!
We are so caught up in this scenario of illusions that we are not able to use technology to work less and have more free time to do what we want. On the contrary we create more needs and cages for ourselves.
The only way to get out of this vicious circle is to acknowledge that we are limited, destined to live very shortly. Maybe then we would stop running after those dreams and appreciate free time in our lives. We also need to reconnect with nature, with our roots, reduce our needs to a minimum. In that way we could save the planet and ourselves.
Finally I want to finish with a phrase by Jose' Mujica ex president of Uruguay: "freedom is to have free time to do what you want". I think it is the best definition of freedom.
